Show Weekend
Gales and snow didn't discourage the 9 paddlers, based
at Tekapo village, from paddling Lake Tekapo and Lake Benmore.
The snow had melted from the decks of the kayaks before launching on
Lake Tekapo on the Friday and the wind vanished, leaving Tim using his
sail/umbrella as a much needed sunshade.
Lunch on an islet was followed by hunting for the giant pine cones
and several were bagged before they escaped.
Saturday saw the group heading south through rain and ominous looking
weather. At Sailors Cutting, Lake Benmore, the sun was shining and the
wind, for most of the trip to the Benmore Dam, was from behind. There
were few power boats and except for the crossing to the gorge the lake
was flat for most of the trip.
The wind on Sunday dissuaded all from paddling as it blew hard across
both Lake Alexadrina and Lake Hood, where some of us had lunch.
